Hallo I do not know much of the Ontario climate but if you want to grow orchids outside you are quite limited. I have red some time about some cypripedium species that would survive even harsh winters. The site was http://www.cypripedium.de Its a german comercial site but also contains information on english that may help you. If you look for indoor orchids a family of easy growing and blossoming exotic orchids is Phalaenopsis. Its not too difficult to handle even though you might need some additional artificial light (make shure to buy a special plant lamp or fluorescent light where the emited spectrum is especially selected for plant stimulation) during winter. In google you will find plenty of information on how to grow it. At least in Europe orchids that have lost their flowers are often sold very cheap in local garden centres. This is a good oportunity to get soem more exotic species and to find out if the plants will survive at your home without risking a fortune. Anyhow you should inform yourself before buying in wha condition they can be cultivated to give them at least a slight chance to stay alive. Usefull information can also be found in the Wikipedia. Finally it could help to associate in an orchids association. Let me know if I could forward you some more information.

I am only home for the day, then I'm going back up to the army base where I work. I will reply when I get a chance
Ricardo - I am planning to grow orchids indoors.
Klaus - Thanks for the information I will check out the site when I get a chance. I was recentely on a field exercise with the military. I saw some lady slipper orchids growing wild. I would imagine they are from the cypripedium species.
I have done a bit of reading but that didn't help much. Tips from your own growing experience would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am now living in Indonesia and am gathering orchids, I have some of the names but the local people do not know the plant name etc, only that the orchid comes from Sumatra, Kalimantan or Java etc. Would anybody be interested in pics or info etc, Thanks, Les
I would definately be interested in pics and info, especially growing conditions if its possible. That must be so cool to get a first hand look at those orchids in their natural habitat.

I would like to have some pics and information about teh orchids found. Anyhow you should notice that orchids are protected by international laws and save very rare exceptions should not be collected from the djungle as this practice has brought many of them close to extinction or even ended up with tehm and thei environment. Try not to pic up one or two specimen and than to multiply tehm by meristem division. There are several sites where this technique is described and there are also specialised laboratories that offer their services. Thanks Klaus

I am in Balikpapan which is 1 degree below the equater, the orchids I have are from vendors who obtain the orchids from nurseries etc in the local area. Most are from divided stock, when I have placed them in my shaded area, fertilized them and some regular care and attention, the orchids begin to respond almost immediately. New root growth etc. I have some flower spikes comming now from a Bulbophyllum and a Bornoe Black orchid. Not a great deal of attention is needed here to grow these, as the humidity is high etc, plus this is the area of their natural habitat. === Original Message ===>>>>
